Does anyone know about capturing, editing and outputting HD video in FCP5? Do you have to install some other program to capture and print to tape, or can it all be done in FCP?
Also, can you output the finished film in both DV and HD formats?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Note that HD and SD are top-level descriptors IMO, HDV is a specific format (with further sub technicalities like 720p and 1080i for eg).Apple has been touting HD editing for the masses ever since version 4.5 released last year. However the "masses" had to shoot with a $60K plus camera then purchase or rent a $25K deck if they wanted to bring that footage into FCP "natively" through firewire. Since then, we have heard much about this new HDV consumer format. And regardless of what your personal feelings are concerning the quality of this format, you cannot escape the fact that many people will enter the HD space for the simple reason that the cameras are under $5K and don't require expensive decks.
That said, there are a few thing you need to keep in mind when working with this format. First, unlike it's cousin mini DV, working natively in HDV requires additional processing whenever you output to tape or export a Quicktime movie. Notice I said processing, not rendering. The data in an HDV clip is essentially a string of MPEG GOPs (group of pictures) containing a pattern of "real" frames (called I frames), and reference frames (called P and B frames). Editing systems like Final Cut Pro can only edit on I frames.
Whenever you make an edit in Final Cut Pro, the I frame position is temporarily stored and the GOP pattern is changed on the fly to accommodate the change in the data structure. As a user, this process is totally transparent making HDV editing as straight forward as editing any other format. The beauty of this method is that you are always editing in the camera-original format with no transcoding into an intermediate codec before you can work with it.
When you are ready to output your movie using Print to Video, Final Cut Pro will render any effects you have applied to your clips, then conform your movie to the HDV-compliant GOP structure. The more edits you have, the longer this process will take. And because the heavy lifting is being performed by your CPU for this conforming process, I recommend the fastest machine you can afford if you plan on doing a lot of long-form HDV editing.
As for transcoding to the miniDV format it will be possible but lengthy rendering.
Speaking of Final Cut Pro actually...
I recently bought a new Power Mac G5 2.7ghz from Apple, and Final Cut Studio...i have 3 gigs of ram and 250gig hard drive. Yet, when playing video in FCP I constantly get dropped frames.
It's not a capture issue, cus it happened on the footage copied from the training dvds too. I tried formatting the drive and starting from scratch with fresh installs but still no joy.
Can someone help? I'm at my wit's end!!

Do you have a lot of sequences and projects open at the same time?
It should'nt matter on your machine, but thats one of the reasons it happens to me sometimes.
No I always just have the one application and one project open at once... I'm so confused as to why it's happening. Do you reckon Apple could have shipped it out with a dodgy processor?

have you run system update recently? there's been a slew of updates for the pro apps, FCP is at 5.03
also, are you on Tiger? cos FCS depends quite heavily on some of the underlying frameworks in Tiger that don't exist in previous versions of OS X.
and is QT at 7.03 or better?
what resolution is your video footage in pixels?
is the new project using the same settings as the captured footage?

Yo. Does anyone know about Apple's repair policy? (I'm still covered by warranty). I've heard they'll pick up the mac and return it repaired. What if they can't fix the problem...do they replace the mac?

how wuch ram have you allocated FCP. its in system settings. (Shift 'Q')
I doubt very much that your machine needs to go back to Apple.
have you also tried re-starting. Is you viewwer window at 100% or 50%. there are loads of things that could be causing dropped frames
